My long awaited Sepia arrived today. Ironic with all this White going on!

(Just a little play with the Sepia)

Officially tonight, I painted White as a background,
Mixing White and Medium straight on the raw canvas. It looked so clean.
Overnight, some pools have dripped causing the cross over of the ground and the foreground, creating a new depth.
As the White, blends over the exsisting color, it becomes apparent itself. In the foreground.
Another of the sculptural canvas’ is still having additional layers.
It sheds old skin and then grows something new. Back and Forth. It is fun and again I am not sure if I should go light or dark for the next layer.

Having said that, My Sepia arrived.
I ordered Sepia recently and it arrived this week. Ironic as I have been so into my White, a little box of Sepia was teasing!
Sepia feels ritualistic. It seems such a dark color and yet when it is mixed with oil or glaze, it has different effect. It’s very darkness allowing some kind of transparency. At the same time if you use more pigment, it goes on like a covering, only holding the vibration of what lies beneath it, not sharing any direct view.

Seems we may be experiencing the Yin and Yan of it after all!

‘The Tree’s of Brazil’ from 2009.
My first experience with Sepia.

Experimenting with a new style in the same palette.

It has been a while since I have blogged. Sometimes life just gets so busy there is just time for painting and family. It has been one of those months! I thought it was time to share a couple of the paintings I have been working on though. One seems to be finished, the other I can feel still calling, I will post it anyway so you can share the development. I welcome any feedback on offer. Continue reading

A new Triptych in Orange, Yellow and Red!

The energy has been flowing at high levels the past two weeks. We have found our new home and move in 6 weeks time. I have the next four weeks to paint and pack the move. I need at least two weeks for the paintings to dry enough to transport safely. Emotions are being reflected in my color choices. They are vibrant in tone, gestural and energetic technique. Happy paintings.

The Red’s have only just begun, We have had three sessions and a base is being laid. The techniques run through a history of their own, in my paintings. The drips keep coming back as do linear markings. It feels primal. I like how techniques are crossing over from different series now. They are becoming my Vocabulary.

I love that I am a part of the desicion of what I want to achieve with a technique now, as appossed to when it was always a suprise that was integrated and observed, now it can be created. I do enjoy the suprise and wonder as I watch the painting change shape before my eyes, when color and gravity play together.

The rivulets are a delight to see formed over a 12-24 hrs period; Bearing witness to where colors meet up and it feels like Delta’s are forming in the downpour, pulling your eye along their path.

I will lie a canvas down flat when it reaches a state of harmony. So it can set and begin finishing.

I’ll usually glaze again after that…. then have another look!

I’m enjoying the warmth and energy of the colors, especially as it is below 10 most nights in the studio!

Looking forward to seeing this Tryptich finished!

Exciting News! Exhibition Confirmation!

Artist, Jan Simon and I will be co-exhibiting in December 09 at ‘Chapel off Chapel Gallery’ in Prahran, Melbourne!

I hadn’t expected a second show this year but it all fell together effortlessly. You know when things are flowing, you should let them ! A very close girlfriend is our common link and making art our common passion. I have really enjoyed meeting her and look forward to sharing time as we co-create this exhibition.

I’ll update details as we get to them. It may seem a way off, but I have learned this year to be prepared, to be better organised with my time and with my energy to manage all the detail. Like with buying the house, so many additional extra’s to attend.

We’ll have to get the invitations sorted for printing and update the mailing list.

If any of you would like to be included on the mailing list, leave a comment with your details at the end of this post and I will include you in our e-list!

I will introduce you to Jan and her work when we have spoken more about what we want to do with the December show.

Jan’s work is colorful and abstracted. I look forward to seeing where she goes with it in the next couple of months. I find the creative energy that is stirred into action with a date set, quite a freeing sense of action. A more daring jump into a new canvas, a push on the pace means quicker more intuitional descisions rather than thinking choices through in detail.

There is a time and place for both.

Details on the Exhibition dates and the Opening Night will be posted shortly.

Back in the studio!

It has been a very busy couple of months! Now the group shows and competitions are over, it is time to get back in the studio! What a joy to be painting again. Interestingly the work is coming through in different series, out of sequence yet again! I know now to trust the process though, as they will read together when they are complete. I had thought I would work on a series at a time systematically but it seems an extension of The Deep End series and a new series born from the Victorian Bushfires wish to be expressed.

This means I am working with a vast range of Blues and Natural tonings. I love The Deep End series. It is soothing to work with Ultamarine, Cobalt, Pthalo and Indigo. They are subtle paintings with much depth. The longer I spend with them, the more I see.

The new series is of faster application, capturing energy and movement. So far they read well together as a series but stand alone confidently too. Once again Olive is featured quite strongly, as in the Tree’s of Brazil series. Lots of glazing and layers, which I enjoy!

It is wonderful getting messy in the studio again. I love the smell and the feel of the paint as I mix the colors. The apprehension and trust as the layers go down, the feeling whilst waiting to see if something is working or not, the excitement when it does and the descision to keep going until

The night before Opening Night!

All that needs to be done for the ‘Messages from the Soul’ is done! What an amazing ride so far! I haven’t had a minute spare to get nervous about tomorrow night. How fabulous! It has crept upon me day by day, step by step! Now, here it is! I am very excited.I am also very tired! No where could you learn that you’ll need to factor in hours upon hours of congratulatory emails and phone calls! Who would have thought! The out pouring was worth this whole experience in itself! People rang to say ‘goodluck’, ’I’ll see you there’ or even to ask ‘what are you wearing?’ Others from interstate and overseas rang to send love and support. It was so wonderful and vascilated between being SO real to being at times, most surreal!  I have been deeply moved and changed in some way! My family have lived on Baked bean dinners and Tuna noodles for an entire two weeks! I bet they look forward to the dust settling somewhat too. Continue reading
